Where I started and how it’s going…

Photography has always played an integral role in my life, and something that was a constant for me, which is why I made the decision to continue my love for photography and study it at university. From around the age of seven I was obsessed with cameras, more specifically the little kids cameras I had and the camera on my little brothers Nintendo DS was also a firm favourite of mine, and from that point on I’ve always been the one that needs to atop and take a photograph. There is something so cool about being able to capture moments in time and keep them forever. Throughout my life I have been involved in many different photography-based experiences which all added to my love of the practise.

One of my favourite photography related experiences was when I participated in the Aberystwyth University Foto Marathon. This involved six different categories, which were all different themes. Three themes are released in the morning and three in the afternoon, the goal is to capture one image for each theme before the deadline at the end of the day. In 2021 when I took part in this, one of the themes was green, and you could interpret this in any which way. For me at the time, I gathered a green bowl and some green apples and took the photograph on the grass so it was very simply a combination of green things, if I took part in the challenge today, I think my images would be very different as both my creative and technical skills have developed and changed in so many different ways.

Although I will always love photography over the last few years its become very obvious to me that this is not the career a want to pursue but I will always have so much love and respect for the practise. If photography is something you are looking to get into my biggest piece of advice would be to just try it, shoot everything, if you have a hobby or passion, shoot that. Enter competitions online, the best way to learn is to keep trying different things and figure out what works for you and what doesn’t.
