Sonder Exhibition

In 2024 as a part of my second year, I worked as part of a team of 18 to create an exhibition entitled ‘Sonder’, this included all the planning and fundraising that goes into a production like this.

Alongside other key members of our group we managed to raise almost £2,0000. We did this through multiple different fundraisers, including a Santa Dash, a Christmas market stall and the classic bake sale. The money we raised went towards paying for our venue, which finding in itself was a huge task), the printing of our exhibition catalogues as well as many other smaller things that require funding.

The venue we held our exhibition in was the Tolston museum in Huddersfield, which is not typically used to host photographic exhibitions which meant we had to get creative with the space in order to fit 18 participants worth of work into, to do this we decided to turn this space into a ‘home’, to do this we sectioned the room into different rooms of a house, with a section as the kitchen, dining room and living room. This was also because the theme of our exhibition was ‘Homeland’ and this layout set the scene.

For my personal practise I took my inspiration from my homeland, which is North Wales. I am such a huge fan of North Wales and will always advocate for it, so I took the idea of tourism and the general Welsh stereotypes, which included Welsh Cakes and Daffodils and created some still life imagery, which I then printed onto household objects to highlight that although it’s a beautiful holiday destination, its also home to a lot of people. These items included a mug, tea towel and lunch box.
